Lt. Keith Boyd of the Marin County Sheriff’s Department just delivered a press conference on live TV detailing the circumstances and details regarding the death of Robin Williams. As has been widely reported, police are confirming that Williams died of the suicidal act of asphyxiation due to hanging. Boyd revealed fairly detailed information about how Williams‘s body was found which may be troubling for some readers. The very sad news of Robin Williams‘s death has just gotten exponentially sadder.
At approximately 11:55 AM yesterday morning (Monday, August 11), a 911 call was made when Robin Williams was found unconscious in his Tiberon, CA home, due to an apparent suicide due to hanging. Rigor mortis had already set in when he was found. Emergency personnel arrived at 12:00 PM in response to that 911 call. Williams had been seeking treatment for depression. His wife last saw him alive at approximately 10:30 PM Sunday night (August 10) when she went to sleep in a room in the home. It is unknown when (or if) he went to sleep in his bedroom. At approximately 10:30 AM, his wife left the home believing him to still be asleep. At approximately 11:45 AM, Robin‘s personal assistant found Williams in his room clothed (not necessarily fully clothed, police won’t confirm) in a seated position unresponsive with belt around his neck with other end of the belt wedged between the clothes closet door and the door frame. His right shoulder area was touching the door with his body perpendicular to the door, slightly suspended. He was found “cool to the touch” with rigor mortis set in. The inside of his left wrist had several acute (eg. recent) superficial transverse cuts, a pocket knife with a closed blade was found in close proximity to the body with what appears to be dried blood on the blade (testing is forthcoming). Forensic investigation did not reveal any injuries that showed that he was involved in a struggle before his death. Preliminary results suggest the cause of death as asphyxia due to hanging. Toxicology testing will not be available for approx. 2-6 weeks. No discussion of the possibility of a suicide note.
Yeah, this is a lot of information to take in. It’s difficult to process, I can’t even begin to imagine how hard this must be for his family. At this point, I don’t even know what else to say. This is just way too tragic.
