Ebola: ECOWAS Seeks Military Support.


The ECOWAS Commission has called on the defense forces of its member states to support efforts towards containing the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in the sub-region which has claimed more than 2,000 lives from almost 4,000 cases.

ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Mrs Salamatu Hussaini Suleiman, made the call in Accra at th 34th Ordinary Session of ECOWAS Committee of Chiefs of Defense staff (CCDS).

She said if not adequately addressed, the disease would have devastating consequences on the development of the region.she called for the concerted efforts in assisting member states whose populations were ravaged by disease. She listed intervention measures taken by the commission in combating the disease as including the setting up of a solidarity fund and multi-stakeholder collaborations to beat the heath emergency.

Suleiman noted that the region had in the past 2 years witnessed challenging crises in Mali and Guinea Bissau as well as terrorism, piracy and other criminal acts in the Gulf of Guinea. 

Ghana's Minister of Defense, Dr. Benjamin Kukuor, decribed the Ebola menace as a very worrying situation requiring the collective efforts of all.

The Hon. Minister thanked World Health Organization and other partners for their support in the handling of Ebola epidemic.
