YEPAYEYE’S BIRTH AND PARENTAGE

 

Yepayeye was born on 5th June 1938. Her mother, little known as Madam Asiaru, whom she never knew was from the small community of Otabi, in Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. Asiaru was betrothed at a very young age and also died young after giving birth to four children. Yepayeye was then raised by one of her step mothers, Mrs. Abebh Uriah-Dieah, who lived far above 90years. Yepayeye’s father, Chief Uriah-Dieah, was a renowned traditional healer whose professional calling was then revered in the society and was one of the first-five Otakeme people to accept Christianity when it arrived in 1904 in the community. Chief Dieah also lived well above one hundred years.
