YEPAYEYE THE DISCIPLINARIAN PAR EXCELLENCE
Yepayeye's commitment to bringing out the best in her children and wards made her the iron-fisted mother, fierce disciplinarian and 'terror' to her children and all those under her care. She would severely punish any child for very bad behaviour such as stealing, truancy at school and, for the girls, indecent play with boys. Yepayeye believed in the strong moral upbringing of children. Her stern disciplinary posture was uncompromisingly balanced with her care for her children and ward. Yepayeye would therefore, never punish a child by denying him food or chasing him out of the home. After any disciplinary measure, she would sit the child down and teach him the standards of behaviour expected of him, and would never alienate any errant child. Yepayeye was so concerned about the wellbeing and welfare of the children her care that she was always distressed and greatly pained when any of her children refused a meal after a well-deserved punishment. She would coax the child to no end to ensure s/he ate and understood the fact that punishment was only a corrective measure.
