FRENCH OPEN 2018: Move Over SLONE, Simona Halep Win First Grand Slam Trophy




26-year-old Romanian, Simona Halep finally broke the jinx to achieved a rare feat at the French Open on Saturday as she overpowered American Sloane Stephens in a Grand Slam final.

Halep added Grand Slam trophy No. 1 to her No. 1 ranking by defeating Sloane 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, to win the French Open on Court Philippe-Chatrier this Saturday. Halep finally join the ranks of leading players whose resilience paid off with a major singles title.

“I was dreaming for this moment since actually I started to play tennis,” Halep said. “It’s my favorite Grand Slam. I always said that if I’m going to win one, I want it to be here. It’s real now.”

She lost in two previous appearances in a final at Roland Garros, against Maria Sharapova in 2014 and Jelena Ostapenko in 2017. Halep then fell to 0-3 with a trophy on the line at the Australian Open in January, where she was beaten by Caroline Wozniacki.
